What a no-cool call usually turns out to be

- Capacitor or contactor. The outdoor unit hums but the fan or compressor will not start. Capacitors wear out faster after a long run of hot afternoons.
- Dirty outdoor coil. Cottonwood, grass clippings and spring pollen pack the fins, head pressure climbs, and the system runs all day without catching up.
- Restricted airflow. A loaded filter, closed registers or a dirty indoor coil starve the system of air. The coil can ice over and the house warms up.

Checks you can do before you call
Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool and the set point is below room temperature. Check the breaker for the outdoor unit and the furnace or air handler. Pull the filter and look at it. If the indoor coil or the refrigerant lines are frozen, turn the system off and let it thaw; running it frozen can damage the compressor. If none of that changes anything, call or text the shop.
