How a mini-split install works
A mini-split pairs an outdoor heat pump with one or more indoor heads. Each head serves a zone and has its own control. The outdoor unit connects to the heads through a small line set, a control wire and a condensate drain run through a hole in the wall, so there is no ductwork to build. Single-zone systems serve one room; multi-zone systems run several heads off one outdoor unit. Most systems heat as well as cool, which makes them a good fit for rooms the main system never reached in either season.
Living with a mini-split
Rinse or vacuum the washable filters in the indoor head every month or two, keep the outdoor unit clear, and have the system checked like any other heat pump. The indoor coils and blower wheels collect dirt over time and benefit from periodic cleaning, especially in our humid summers. We will also tell you when a mini-split is not the answer, for example when a duct repair or a central system fix would solve the room for less.
