Signs the ducts are the problem
- One room or the whole upstairs is always hotter in summer and colder in winter
- High bills with equipment that tests fine
- Dust that comes back days after cleaning
- Whistling grilles, or doors that slam or whistle when the system starts
- A musty smell when the system kicks on, often from a damp crawl space
Attics and crawl spaces
Many houses here run supply ducts through a hot attic, a damp crawl space or both. A leak in the attic dumps cooled air into a space that can top 120 degrees in summer. A leak on the return side in a crawl space pulls damp, musty air into the house. Flex duct that has sagged, kinked or slipped off a fitting chokes airflow to the rooms at the end of the run.
What we do about it
We inspect the runs we can reach, check how the supply and return are sized for the equipment and repair what is failing: reconnecting and supporting flex, sealing joints with mastic, replacing crushed or torn sections, adding a return where a closed-off room has none, and replacing duct systems that are past saving.
